The Aiea (pronounced eye-eh-ah) and Pearl City areas of the island are called the "Leeward side'. Most of the housing areas are built on the hillside overlooking Pearl Harbor, providing some nice views of the ocean off in the distance. This area started out years ago as housing areas for the sugar cane and pineapple workers, as well as many military housing areas.
It has continued over the decades to be a very established residential area for the local families. Not to be taken as a 'bad area' rather more the opposite. Folks in these areas tend not to move and instead pass their homes down to the generations. It has a lot to offer, though, like long time family owned businesses, stores and restaurants. Since the growth of the areas to the North and West of Aiea, many people prefer to move here, due to it's access to arterial roads, highways and freeways that lead into town, thereby missing the morning and afternoon traffic times.

Welcome to Honolulu, Hawaii
The Hawaiian Islands are the most remote land mass in the world. Our closest neighboring land mass is San Francisco, at 2,339 miles. Hawaii became part of the United States, as the 50th state, in August of 1959. You will most likely find locals correcting you, when you say, "Back in the States...", since we are also a state.
The islands of Hawaii consist of 8 islands, 2 of which you can not visit. Kahoolawe, off Maui, is off limits, as it was used by the military for many years for bombing practice and still has some unexploded ordinances. The other island is Niihau, which was purchased by the Robinson family and used as a Hawaiian life preserve. One can only visit that island, under special invitation.
