Diamond Head is one of the most recognized land marks of the world. To most of the world, it symbolizes 'Paradise'. This extinct volcanic crater sits on the South side of world famous Waikiki Beach. The peak of Diamond Head is visited by over 2 million hiking tourists a year and the lighthouse on the point of the crater, is the finish line to the semi-annual TransPac sailboat race, from Long Beach to Hawaii.
But, there is another reason why this area has long been the desirable location for the rich and famous, over other beaches of the island. It is because the tradewinds, that keep the islands cool over 95% of the time, move from Northeast to Southwest. When you live near the beach on this Southwest coast, you don't get a lot of the salt air, that can deteriorate a lot of the metal and electronics in your (very expensive) home.
Needless to say, homes on the ocean side of Diamond Head, are highly desired by the affluent and celebrities alike.

Welcome to Honolulu, Hawaii
The Hawaiian Islands are the most remote land mass in the world. Our closest neighboring land mass is San Francisco, at 2,339 miles. Hawaii became part of the United States, as the 50th state, in August of 1959. You will most likely find locals correcting you, when you say, "Back in the States...", since we are also a state.
The islands of Hawaii consist of 8 islands, 2 of which you can not visit. Kahoolawe, off Maui, is off limits, as it was used by the military for many years for bombing practice and still has some unexploded ordinances. The other island is Niihau, which was purchased by the Robinson family and used as a Hawaiian life preserve. One can only visit that island, under special invitation.
