Areas of Oahu and Honolulu

Areas of Oahu – While the island of Oahu is the third largest island in the Hawaiian chain, it does have the highest population.  Approximately 1 million people live here, with ranging densities from the hundreds of high-rises in Honolulu and Waikiki, to the sprawling acreages of the Waialua coastline.  So, while the ‘Median Price’ for home may seem high or fair, remember that this means that half the properties are less than that amount, and the other half are higher.

The island of Oahu is made up entirely of the County of Honolulu. The ‘Windward Side’ of the island is so named, because our tropical breezes tend to blow from the Northeast, bringing rain and clouds to that side of the island, almost daily. The areas of the Windward side are Waimanalo, Kailua, Kaneohe, Hauula, Kaaawa and Kahuku. The side of the island is known for it’s beautiful majestic cliffs (Pali).

The Leeward side of the island has is usually much drier, in contrast. The mountains come down to the sea, by large ridges, with many neighborhoods built on them, some with amazing ocean views. The areas of the Leeward side Ewa Beach and Kapolei, Pearl City, Aiea, Honolulu, Kaimuki, Kahala and Hawaii Kai.

The Waianae Coast, also known as the West Side, is known to be a lot drier than that of the rest of Oahu. Beautiful long white sandy beaches and large valleys make up most of this area that is surrounded by the Waianae Mountain Range. Areas of the West side are Ko’Olina, Nanakuli, Waianae and Makaha. This West Side has one road in with a a dead end on the northern side of Makaha. One bad road accident can cause traffic to be backed up for hours.

Central Oahu is the isthmus between the Koolau and the Waianae Mountain ranges. This area tends to be cooler, due to its higher elevation. Once filled with pineapple fields, homes have now taken over and have become very popular places to live, for military personnel and first time buyers. Areas of Central Oahu are Kunia, Waipio, Mililani and Wahiawa.

The North Shore. Aptly named, this is the home to some of the largest surf-able waves during the winter months. The potential damage to properties caused by waves is second to the imminent damage to your electronics and cars, caused by the salt in the air. Yet, this is still some of the highest priced beach front property in the island. These areas are Waialua, Haleiwa, Pupukea, Waimea and Sunset Beach.
